Julie asked:
You mention checking the glucose level....how do you do that? Are you doing a small blood draw? I have a meter, but I've been told that the lancets I have are too painful for use on the ferret's feet (and I believe that) and that they have tried doing it at the shelter, but it thaks 3 to hold the poor critter. Mine needs a pretty good drop of blood -- do you have one of those meters that uses a tiny amount? I'd feel soooo much better if i could just check it if he seems to be going low.

Ron and I use a Breeze meter. We don't use the lancet "shooter" we just use the lancet. We squeeze a hind foot a few times to get the blood really pumping and, we pick the juiciest looking toe, and poke the toe on the side of the pad with the lancet.
To avoid wiggling, it is best if you can sneak up on them when they are asleep.
However if they are awake and you really need to check them, when I am alone, I have to wrap the ferret in a hand towel with the hind feet sticking out and "clamp" the rest of the ferret under my arm.
